Burncrooks Reservoir

Starting Point for the Walk:

The Car Park at the Edenmill Farm Café, Edenmill Farm, Stockiemuir Road, Blanefield, Glasgow G63 9AX – [OS Reference NS 514 793].

Getting there: 11 miles / 31 minutes

Take your favourite route out to Bearsden and then pick up the Stockiemuir Road (A809) towards Carbeth.  At Auchengillan turn left onto a single track road down to Edenmill Farm.  The Edenmill Café is clearly signed from the A809.

The Walk:  Burncrooks Reservoir – 7 miles (11 km)

Starting from the car park, head towards the east side of the café and pick up the John Muir Way signs.  At the T-junction, instead of turning left onto the John Muir Way turn right onto a shingle roadway for a few hundred metres before veering left through a gate.  Continue on this path until another junction.  Turn right and follow this track past South Lodge until it meets a roadway near the water works.  Turn left onto the John Muir Way and follow the road through the water works area and exit through a gate to continue on the same road.  Follow this road, which eventually gives views over Burncrooks Reservoir, until the dam can be seen off to the left.

At this point either cross the dam and exit (through sometimes boggy ground) to meet a narrow path, then turn left.  Alternatively, descend on the roadway to cross a small bridge and then ascend a short path through a deer gate to join the narrow path.  Turn left (away from the John Muir Way) and descend a gentle path to cross Burn Crooks.  Continue following the narrow path around the reservoir which, on a good day, gives spectacular views over the reservoir to the hills beyond.  On the eastern side of the reservoir the path joins a forest track near a gate.  Turn left and at the end of the track turn right to re-join the road of the outward route (the John Muir Way).  Follow this road downhill until a small collection of dwellings and then continue on before turning sharp right onto the vehicular access road to the Café.
